Azerbaijan is famous for its good population of East Caucasian Ibex / Dagestan Tur. We presently hunt the well known areas Ismaili and Filfili, both located on the western side of the Baba Dag Mountain (Baba Dag means father of all mountains). These areas are holding a very good population of East Caucasian Ibex, which may have a life size weight of up to 100 kg. Average good Tur carry horns with 70 – 80 cm. Very Good trophies will have a length of 80 – 85 cm and the exceptional odd ones may have horns being up to 95 cm long. However, quite often old and mature Turs do have heavy broomed horns, what means that very old Turs often have slightly shorter horns than medium aged ones.
The hunt for East Caucasian Ibex is a very selective hunt which requires very good physical skills. You will hunt in a most beautiful mountain area, but you need to be prepared that these mountains are rugged and steep and although our hunts are horse assisted you need to be prepared to walk and stalk quite a lot. Although most experienced mountain hunters agree that this may be one of the really challenging mountain hunts, our hunts have proven to be very successful and in most years we score on a 100% kill possibility and very high success.
In the hunting area you may find as well a small population of Caucasian Chamois, some Roe deer and wild boar. In case you find a chance you may add this to your bag. There are as well some brown bears roaming the area, but presently it is not allowed to import brown bear skins from Azerbaijan in to EU-countries!
The season starts in this year on 1st June. Hunting in beginning of the season has the advantage that the Tur are not yet spooky. In June the weather is still unpredictable and you need to be prepared that weather may change quite often and quickly and you need to be prepared for days with bright sun, but as well fog, rain and even snowfall may occur.
When arriving in the hunting area you will stay during first night in this base house. On next day you will head into the hunting area, your luggage will be carried by horses – as far as they can go. Our partner has a very experienced crew of guides who know very well where to find the big Tur.
After having reached the area for hunting, a spike camp with small tents will be made. Here of course only basic comfort will be offered, but hunting out of these spike camps helps to limit stalking distances. During your hunt you will be guided on 1/1 – each hunter with his guide. Although we are able to accommodate up to 5 hunters at the same time we limit ourselves to maximum 4 hunters in order to provide every participant with best possible chances to get a big Tur.
From spring onwards male Tur form bachelor groups with males only. The sizes of these bachelor groups vary from a few to 20 males, but some-times we see much bigger groups with even more than 50 males.
Hunting is carried out by stalking. Like all other mountain game the Tur has an excellent visual faculty and is as well very sensitive on smell. When hunting by stalking shooting distances may be in the range of 150 – 350 meters. Please zero your rifle at home for 200 or 250 meters and check shot placement as well on 300 and 350 meters. Best calibres are medium sized calibres with high velocity such as 7 mm Rem. Mag.,.300 Win. or Weatherby Mag., .300 RUM, 30-378 or similar. We want to advise every hunter to bring as well a good spotting scope and range finder.
